There is a particular Lovers Rock feeling: the bass sits low, the vocal stays close and nothing is rushed. Golden Voices of Lovers Rock brings that sound to Boisdale with Kofi and Mike Anthony, two artists whose songs have long belonged to the UK reggae dancefloor, the front room and the late-night radio dedication.
Kofi first came through with Brown Sugar, the trio whose early success sits right at the beginning of the Lovers Rock story. Their 1977 single "I’m in Love with a Dreadlocks" was the first release on the Lovers Rock label, a name that went on to define the genre itself. As a solo artist, Kofi built a catalogue of British reggae favourites including "Looking Over Love", "Black Pride" and "Didn’t I", the latter two both reaching number one in the British reggae charts in 1988.
Mike Anthony brings the smoother late-80s and 90s Lovers Rock thread, with songs shaped by romance, melody and an easy vocal pull. Early hits such as "Crash Crash", "Glide Gently" and "Open Your Heart" led into his Fashion Records era, where "Still Your Number One" and his chart-topping version of "Walk Away from Love" became staples for Lovers Rock audiences.
Backed by the Zaine Band and hosted by the inimitable John McLean, the night draws together songs including "Looking Over Love", "Black Pride", "Didn’t I", "Spread Love", "Walk Away from Love" and "Still Your Number One". It is a set built on feel rather than fuss: steady grooves, clean melodies and voices that know exactly how much to leave unsaid.
